Is Tom Cruise's Star Fading?

November 1st 2006 23:00
One of the Paramount bosses, Sumner Redstone, responsible for dropping Tom from Paramount 2 months ago claimed that the reason Cruise was dropped was because of his dwindling appeal to women.

Tom Cruise was once the stuff of womens fantasies (well, women in a certain age bracket anyway). If you're in my age group, then you would probably admit (under sufferance) to having had a massive crush on Tom Cruise after seeing him in Top Gun. I may be no Tom fan, but ohhh, crikey he was hot as Pete Maverick (though strangely, it was his sidekick Goose that I loved most......but that's another topic altogether). However, since hooking up with fiance Katie Holmes, Tom's behaviour has gotten downright strange and is turning women off in droves.

First there was the couch jumping incident on Oprah. I watched that interview and it was bad......so bad at times that I had to close my eyes. Then, Tom publicly pronounced that Brooke Shields was wrong to have taken anti-depressants after suffering from post-natal depression when her first child was born. Considering Tom has never given birth, and follows a ridiculous religion that insists on total silence and no drugs during the birth of a child......women understandly didn't feel that Tom had any right to pass judgement on anyone! Tom eventually apologised for his comments.....but it was a case of too little too late.

According to Sumner Redstone, his wife told him that she, like women everywhere had come "to hate the actor". Hate may be a little harsh, but his appeal has certainly dwindled.

According to Redstone, in the end, it was the fact that Tom Cruise's appeal to women definitely appears to be fading, combined with the fact that the studio found his antics embarassing that led to Cruise being dropped by the studio.

It may sound harsh, but when you can command in excess of $20 Million dollars a movie. A studio wants to be damned sure that that you're definitely worth it.

It faded not because of the couch jumping incident, but because the media decided to turn on him.

Sure, Tom started the fire, but the media certainly had no problems fanning the flames imo.

I don't think Tom Cruise commands a set amount of money for a movie nowadays. Instead, he'll just command say 20% of worldwide box office earnings - a staggering amount of money.

But I definitely agree with you when you say a studio should be damn sure an actor is worth the money and Paramount certainly doesn't think he does.

I found it amazing how quickly the media turned on him. He went from the darling of Hollywood to suddenly being the leper of Hollywood.

I don't mind that the media turned on him. We used the media to self-promote himself, and fired his previous agent, who had a good sense of reservation.

I think, now, we see the real Cruise: reckless and partially insane.

Plus, he used his connections to block a South Park episode that made fun of him. Where's the freedom?

Oh definitely. If you're going to use the media to help get you to those lofty heights, you have to remember that they can help bring you right back down!

In only a year or two ago he's gone from one of the most powerful men in Hollywood to being an embarassment. How quickly they fall.....

Tom Cruise's star is still shining bright - just for all the wrong reasons. He used to be a star because he was a heart-throb. Now he's a star because he's a weirdo.

Ha, good point Nina. It's weird how someone who was so careful to protect his privacy and be very reserved from the media and only let them see what he wanted.........ended up jumping up and down on Oprah's couch and proposing to Katie Holmes in front of journalists etc.

Oh god, no I haven't. And I don't think I'd want to.

That is just an odd religion. I mean, to follow a religion created by a science-fiction writer???? I don't get it.....and more to the point, I don't want to! : )

What happened in the couch jumping interview?

I saw Tom Cruise interviewed on 60 Minutes a while back and he became really aggressive towards the journo. The journo didn't even do much to provoke him but he just couldn't deal with a criticism of the Scientology religion he follows.

From what you hear, it sounds as though Scientology is what turned him nutty. Or did he turn to Scientology when he became nutty? Who can tell but I'm glad Nicole Kidman has gone on to bigger and better things after their divorce!

He's just another person.. give him a break. So he's a bit weird- that's his deal. You talk about him passing judgement- um okay and what exactly are you doing?
As far as his beliefs go, I think they're crazy. But that's my opinion, and you have no right to insult his beliefs for any reason. It's your opinion also, and you should at the very least label them as such. The sad part is, if he came out and said he was gay- you would probably say THAT'S HIS RIGHT... and defend him.
I just happened to stumble upon this pathetic site, I've already made sure to down rate it.. hopefully no one else has to waste time reading this nonsense ranting of your's either.

Thanks for your opinions guys. Glad to hear your opinions of my pathetic site AndrewM . Sorry, but I won't apologise for putting forth my views on Tom and his general oddness.

I'm not sure why Tom is so nutty Candice. It only seems to have been in the last year or so that he's really turned people off him. Until then we thought he was odd, but hey most actors are. He's been a scientologist for a really long time (before he married Nicole I believe). So I don't think we can lay the blame at the feet of religion.

Hey, maybe he really is crazy in love? lol.

News Flash!
MGM have just announced that they have joined forces with Tom Cruise and his business partner Paula Wagner to resurrect the once huge studio company United Artists (originally formed by Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and others).
So now we'll have Tom Cruise the movie MOGUL.
YIKES!!!!!

Hello KylieW,

Thought I'd leave a comment this time, although I've enjoyed some of your posts for a while now...

For what its worth, I'm with AndrewM on this one... it has shades of Steve Irwin stamped all over it... Not that I am a Scientology fan mind, but there is some merit in the fusion of spirituality and science - to a point, I'm not so sure a lot of screaming and shouting at childbirth is necessary, really.... but agree it's an individuals...choice.

Good news about the United Artists Studio's - gosh can you imagine the films coming out of there in years to come...?

Lilla...

Yes, I just posted about the new studio deal. Personally, I'd like to see Tom prove his detractors wrong and make some great movies. But we can only wait and see I guess.
