Crocodile Hunter Dies
September 4th 2006 06:37
Today is a very sad day for Crocodile Hunter fans everywhere. The Courier Mail in Brisbane reported earlier today that the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin was killed in a stingray attack off the coast of Cairns.
I know we shouldn't be shocked that a man who makes his living catching crocodiles and following large, dangerous animals around has died at an early age (he was only 44 years old), but I think we all are.
I'm a huge Steve Irwin fan. He is one of the most passionate people I've watched on television. I know many Australian's who don't like him, but there's nothing I love more than watching him on tv, yelling out 'crikey' everytime he experiences a near miss. Any man who loves animals as much as Steve Irwin, can't be bad. Yes, he is practically a caricature of himself, but that is (or should I say 'was') part of his charm.
Steve Irwin was loved far and wide. He was hugely popular in America, long before many of us in Australia even took any notice of him.
Steve experienced a very public backlash against him when he decided to feed the croc's at Australia Zoo while he was holding his young son Bob. Sure it's probably not an action most parent groups would recommend, but I personally think that it personifies who Steve Irwin is. Sure, crocodiles are dangerous, but he knew exactly what he was doing and therefore felt that baby Bob was safe. To Steve Irwin, feeding the croc's with baby Bob, was akin to your parents holding a baby while feeding the dog (still probably not a recommended course of action).
What is sure, is that thousands of people around the world will be shocked and saddened to hear of this loveable ocker's early demise. I'm not sure I'm ever going to be able to hear "crikey" ever again without thinking of the Crocodile Hunter
