Has Political Correctness Gone Too Far?
October 2nd 2006 23:17
Watching the news last night, I was absolutely incensed when I heard that David Wirrpunda had had to come out and apologise for not shaking the hand of the Aboriginal girl who handed him his premiership medal.
Wirrpunda was one of 8 players who forgot to shake the hands of the kids who presented them with their premiership medals. Not, because the football players had some kind of grudge against the kids, or a hidden agenda. But rather, because they were still high on the adrenaline that comes from winning a Grand Final by 1 point less than 10 minutes earlier.
Footballers are (and I'm going to generalise here) not the smartest swimmers in the gene pool. And we all know that men can only think of one thing at a time. So cut the guys some slack!
But what really angers me, is that there was very little mention of the 7 other players who forgot to shake hands. In fact, they never named those players. However, an Aboriginal player forgetting to shake hands with an Aboriginal child, apparently is newsworthy. What it is, is completely hypocritical. Nobody seems to care about the blond haired blue eyed boys and girls who didn't get their hands touched by the blond footy players. And if Anthony Rocca forgot to shake hands with an obviously Italian kiddy, we wouldn't have heard a thing about it. But an Aboriginal player making an oversight like that makes it onto the nightly news.
Political correctness irritates me no end, and this is precisely why. To the hypocrites who even made this a news story, GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!!
