Pete Doherty - Still The Luckiest Junkie Alive
August 8th 2007 01:22
How does he do it???? Pete Doherty was back in court yesterday for sentencing for driving illegally while in possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis. Damn, that's quite a cocktail!! Given that this is not Pete's first offence, he has a string of previous drug related charges, you might expect that Pete would get a reasonably severe sentence.
So, just what did Pete get? Jail time? Fines? Community Service? No. What Pete got was a stern warning!! Ohhhhh, I bet Pete's shaking in his boots. Well, actually he probably was shaking, but that's from the combination of heroin withdrawl and the crack he smoked this morning! The judge had this to say about Pete's sentence.
Sentencing has been adjourned until September 7 to give Pete time to prove his dedication to keeping clean. He also has to stay out of London. If he doesn't prove himself, supposedly this time he really will be sent to jail (yeah huh, sure!).
Okay, yes Pete has had an anti-drug implant to help him kick his heroin habit. But this is a man who has had multiple drug convictions and has had more failed attempts at rehab than Lindsay Lohan. When is he finally going to be sentenced to prison??????? I'm pretty sure that Pete could shoot up in the court room and these judges would simply shake their finger at him and say "you're a very naughty boy Pete. Put away the needle and go to your naughty corner and think about what you've done. We'll meet back here in a month. And as long as you don't take anything stronger than crack then we'll consider the matter finished."

What I have in mind is to adjourn this matter for four weeks to assess his motivation.
"What I have in mind is a community order or prison. If he does not show his motivation, it’s prison - it’s as simple as that."

As in...he's so addicted, if thrown in, he would die from withdrawal.
...and that would then be a case of manslaughter on the courts part.
He needs to be sentenced to those 'wash clinics, where they strap them in hose the body internally..I'm not sure if I really know what i'm writing about...have you heard of these clinics? I saw it on TV. Real hard core stuff.
The 'patients' have no say. For 24 hours straight they get 'flushed' with something to rid the body of drug toxins. Supposedly very very painful and from what I saw a very effective strike rate.
Maybe the judges look at him and feel sorry for him. He's fucked his future up. Life is about living dangerously but it's not supposed to be destructive.
...shambles indeed.

It's just sad really. From all accounts he's a really talented songwriter (I didn't mind some of his stuff when he fronted The Libertines). But he's just throwing his life away.
I haven't heard of those hard core rehab places. But you think that nothing short of that is going to help him. The antidrug implant is a good start, but he's just substituting heroin for crack and other drugs.

I know, what is about him?
I was reading the NME blog about Pete in court, and the interviewer was saying that he just has a charismatic quality about him. The interviewer was a bit tongue tied around him.
He's got to have something about him for everyone to overlook his many shortcomings!!!

And could you imagine the track marks he'd have on his arms from all the years of shooting up heroin.. ....ugh, gross!

A dear friend of mine was a "closet" junkie for years, while he was dying in hospital after an overdose that caused him to vomit and aspirate resulting in a hole in one of his lungs and shut his kidneys down, some of his fellow "I'm not a junkie because I hold down a job and can afford my drugs", so called friends came out of the woodwork, I was very suprised at the people who were actually junkies but didnt realise it ( he died after two months in intensive care after multiple organ failure)..
When I lived in Thailand I became aware of the "system" over there for treating drug offenders. It is very similar to what Dusk mentioned and very very effective. They are sent to a Buddhist Monastery, (there was one that was the hardest of the hardest, I believe there are many more now...They are not given any sort of panacea for the withdrawals, they are forced to drink gallons upon gallons of salt water until they purge and purge and purge, both ends....It isnt pretty but it has a pretty good success rate.
Its a shame that the press love people like Pete with a death wish. If there wasnt so much publicity maybe he could just fade into obscurity rather than become the next music star with a death wish who becomes idolised by young people trying to justify their own particular death wish...
Sorry for ranting....Its a raw nerve struck...X Miss N

Feel free to rant. I think that you're exactly right. I know of a couple of people who have found out that their respectable, reasonably successful partners are closet junkies.
And you're right. I think one of the powers of any addiction is ability of your mind to convince yourself that you don't have a problem. And seeing someone like Pete who so obviously does have a problem but is a media darling and dating a supermodel makes you think, 'hey, he's doing okay, so what's the problem?" Addiction isn't glamourous!
Mind you, Pete is now homeless. Now that he isn't sponging off Kate, he's living in a caravan. Now that the judge has banished him from London he has to live with his mother I believe. Not quite so glamourous now!
