Mel Gibson Needs More Anger Management Classes

March 26th 2007 04:19
Looks like Mel Gibson still has a few issues with his anger. Mel's now famous temper came to public notice last year after he was arrested for drunk driving and indulged himself in a tirade about jews. And now, he's done it again.

Last Thursday night, Mel went ballistic at Cal State University where he was speaking to a film class about his movie Apocalytpo.

After Mel's presentation, Alicia Estrada, an Assistant Professor of Central American Studies asked Mel if he had read up on Mayan culture before making Apocalypto. Gibson said that he had. Ms Estrada pressed further, stating that portraying the Mayans in the movie as indulging in sacrificial ceremonies and showing them as having bloodthirsty tendencies was both wrong and racist.

Gibson then exploded in anger telling Estrada to "Lady, Fuck Off".

Mel apparently became even more angry when members of the Mayan community protested about the way they were portrayed in the room. Eventually unhappy protesters were escorted from the room, but not before Gibson could yell at them to "make their own movie".

Don't you just love Mel?????

Actually, I'm with him on this one. C'mon people......it's a movie. It's not real life. I'm sure it makes for a better story if the Mayan's were bloodthirsty savages. Get over it!

I agree ... it's a movie. And should probably have the disclaimer at film's redits end stating that the history depicted in this movie is fictional. Not sure if it does ...
Poor Mel ... the whole world's against him.
Perhaps he should re-consider and do George Miller's Fury Road ...? Y'know, vent a little Mad Max anger.

Bryn,

Yeah, I think that's exactly what Mel needs. An outlet to let some of that anger out!

Kylie W ...

I would have said the same thing Mel did ...

Make your own movie ...

Somehow though, I don't think a film about the Mayan women's league sitting around knitting and talking about how they're not a bloodthirsty race for two hours would make all that compelling cinema ...

He could handle his anger a little better, though...

I think Gibson and David O. Russell should work on a movie project together.

It's been said, but artistic license people. It's not a documentary, it's a fictional movie.

Did Aussies complain about Crocodile Dundee? No. Harden the fuck up, Mayans.

Same issues came up when he made Brave Heart.
It was a movie not a doco.

there is also a kind of Mayan lobby that believes that they could do no wrong. A utopian view of the noble savage which fails to look at evidence that disproves it.

I think this was just a case of Mel dealing with a heckler.

I just saw 300.
WOW.
I didn't realise it was based on a grpahic novel.
It's not historically accurate in the slightest.
It's totally stylised.
The Persians are portrayed as a decadent and mythical bunch of sexually confused meglamaniacs,
The Spartans are all handsome as hell with perfect teeth and perfect enunciation.
The violence is uber and overtly stylised.
Makes for great cinema though!!!!

Apparently not, but that should be Directors, not Actors.. ;o)

My point exactly. I can't stand people that assume a film based on history has to be 100% accurate. How the hell can you claim accuracy in ancient history anyway?? Even the most documented events are sketchy, and often entwined with mythology anyways.

Apolcalypto was a film about a guy and his family, set across the backdrop of an imploding civilisation. Who cares about accuracy? It's enterntainment, and damn good entertainment at that.

In Mel's own words: "Lady, Fuck Off". (Not you, Kylie!!)

I would have reacted the same way!

Keep up the good work KW.

And also, having now watched the video on the link above,it would seem that these guys showed no respect themselves by showing up to a lecture intended to benefit students, and disrupted the whole thing by being petulant and reading prepared statements in native american... I mean geez... how much can a guy take??

Surely there's a time and place to address certain things? Everyone is entitled to an opinion at the end of the day, but what the hell!?

Bryn - yes I've heard about 300. I might have to check it out, even though it's not my kind of movie.

You mean all the Spartans might not have actually have been buffed and hot??? Well damn!

Yoda76 - I agree with you 100%. And you're right, the people who interupted were petulant and had their own agendas.

Just to put my 2 cents in...part of what enthralled about the Mayan culture in history books was the juxposition between their babrabric religious practices and the advanced understanding of maths and science. The whole UFO conspiracy theory about their architecture and culture also attracted me to them...Point being human sacrifice happened with some regularity along with other more positive things. Mel has portaryed a part of the culture with some attention to detail and just because he didnt embrace other aspects doesn't mean its inaccurate it just means he chose an angle and stuck with it. Its not like he said he was making Chariots of The Gods or something.

As for Spartans, they were actually all in peak physical condition, becaue the runts of the litter were disposed of at a young age. They were not steroid buff like in the movie, but as a warrior race with a strict regime of constant battle training they would have had naturally large physiques.

The Persians persuasions are a different matter.....

JD - Very good point. Besides when was the last time you saw a film that was totally accurate?? Do I really believe that the Titanic hit an iceberg because the dude who was supposed to be watching for icebergs was distracted by a couple canoodling on deck?? Probably not.....
