Is Mel Blaming Jews for his Anti-Semitic Rant?
October 17th 2006 00:38
I feel for Mel Gibson. The poor guy gets drunk, spews forth with an anti-semitic tirade at the cops who arrest him, and suddenly the whole world knows of his indiscretion. And in true narrow-minded fashion, all anyone cares about is his anti-jewish comments. We don't seem to care that he got behind the wheel of his car while hopelessly drunk and could have easily killed himself or someone else. No, what everyone cares about is that Mel Gibson apparently hates Jews.
I don't condone what he said (as someone who considers herself extremely tolerant, ignorance and racism are qualities that I abhore), but I think we need some perspective on the whole issue.
Unfortunately, Mel isn't helping himself any. In an interview on Good Morning America, Mel said that he partly blames his comments on the criticism aimed at him by Jewish leaders when Passions of the Christ was released in 2004. Mel said that he felt he took a brutal public beating (metaphorically of course) when Passions was released. While he thought he'd dealt with the resentment of this criticism, it appeared that perhaps he hadn't done so.
I have only 2 things to say on that:
1. Get over it Mel. When you were making Passions, I'm pretty sure that you were well aware that the movie was going to polarise religious groups. In fact I'm pretty sure that the controversy surrounding the movie is at least partly responsible for it grossing over $600 million. And, as expected, Passions took a hammering from a number of religious and non-religous groups at the time. You can't just blame the jews. I think, from memory, many Christians were unhappy, and I haven't heard you ranting about how Christians started all the wars.
2. And, dude, do you even realise that you're essentially saying that you blame Jews for your anti-semitic remarks?????
Mel, Mel, Mel. I think perhaps it's time to just keep quiet. Just for a little while.
