What Would You Do (Or Have You Done) To Meet A Celebrity?
October 10th 2006 00:45
For someone who LOVES everything about Hollywood, celebrities and stars, I'm remarkably restrained when it comes to trying to go about meeting any of these people (probably because while I revel in the trashyness of Hollywood, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't like most of the people I read about!). Yet, I know a lot of people who have gone to great lengths to meet their heroes.
My single close brush with fame came while I was last visting the US. I spent a week or so in LA (plenty long enough thank you!), and when I walked out of Tiffany's (a girl can dream), Ron Howard and his wife walked right past me. Then later that same day, I was trying on a pair of Jimmy Choo mules in Saks of 5th Avenue (I know it sounds like I'm name dropping here, but what you probably will never understand is firstly how important shoes are to me, and secondly, that buying Jimmy Choo's in Saks was one of the high points of my entire life) when Alex Kingston was also trying on a pair of Jimmy Choo boots right beside me. I know many of you probably don't love a B-grade celeb as much as I do, and are probably wondering who Alex Kingston is. She was the English doctor in ER who eventually married Dr Greene. And even though we could have bonded over the gorgeous shoes we were both about to purchase, I didn't say anything to her.
On the other hand, I know people who have camped outside of Robbie Williams hotel room for days on end to get a glimpse of him. I know a friend who, years ago, spent so much time watching a certain Cricket team play, practice and drink that she eventually ended up sleeping with most of the team.
Stalking a celebrity to meet them, is not really my cup of tea, but I admire anyone who has the guts to get out there and make their own luck......or take that luck and run with it, if they happen to stumble across a celeb.
Have you, or anyone you know, ever gone to great lengths to meet a celebrity? Or met a celebrity by chance and taken the opportunity to get to know them?

Kieth Richards, too, another great bloke. Jammed with him in the Hurricane Katrina/9-11 benefit last year in CT. Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Ginger Baker, Marc Mann, they were all there, and I played with them all. Lionel Ritchie shook my hand after my rendering of Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind".
Ron Wood shook my hand (years ago, in England) after my rendering of "Proud Mary" and "Midnight Special" at his local and I didn't even know it was him.
Stalking celebrities? If that's your bag, do it. Like everything. I was just extremely lucky, that's all.
