Fitting Memrial for Steve Irwin
September 21st 2006 00:19
Yesterday's memorial for our much loved Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin was a tribute worthy of one of the worlds best known (and loved) Australians.
I'm sure those of you who watched it on TV, and there was an estimated audience of 300 million watching, had a hard time keeping the tears at bay.
Who else had to blink back tears watching Terri Irwin try to keep it together as the tributes flowed. I thought Bindi did a great job talking about her dad who was her hero. For an eight year old girl, she did an amazing job.
And whose heart didn't go out to Bob Irwin, Steve's father. I think he said it right when he said not to grieve for the Steve, but rather to grieve for the animals who lost the best friend they ever had.
Can you imagine ANY other Australian getting the kind of memorial that Steve did? Is there anyone else that 300 million people would tune in to watch? I doubt it.
Overall, I thought the memorial service was great. It had the right amount of laughter and heartfelt emotion. The Irwin's certainly made the right decision when they decided to do their own tribute to Steve, rather than having a state funeral.
The finale, where John Williamson sang Steve's favourite song "True Blue" was truly heart wrenching. Men, women and children alike were openly crying on the tv.
Many people probably weren't aware that the fellow who packed up Steve's ute while the song was playing, was actually in the water with Steve when he died. He was one of the people who tried desperately to save his life.
I look forward to seeing Terri and Bindi's interview with Barbara Walters. Even though I hate Ray Martin, I know I'll also watch that as well.
He may have only been with us for a short time, but what an impact he had. I believe that he achieved his goal of making the world more aware of the importance of conservation, and has passed his love of all creatures great, small, ugly and dangerous along to us all.

But he has shown us in a different point of view, be in the croc's shoes for once than in the human eye.
Yep. He is greatly missed indeed.
I didn't manage to watch from TV because I'm not from Australia. Do you know where might there be a place to download the memorial service?

Learning Something Everyday
It is truly a lost for the animals to have such an ally. I hope that others will take his courage to stand up for nature as a learning experience and perhaps, follow his legacy to ensure that our future generations could still see our green earth in future. (And not like those Sci-Fi movies where everyone sees nothing but technology and being shunt away what is once beautiful on our land)
