Richard Gere Is A Wanted Man
April 27th 2007 01:55
An Indian court has issued a warrant for the arrest of Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty for a public kiss that took place last Thursday at an HIV/AIDS awareness event, that 'transgressed all limits of vulgarity'.
Judge Dinesh Gupta issed the warrants after a local citizen filed a complaint charging that the public display of affection offended local sensibilities. Gupta viewed television footage of the event, calling it 'highly sexually erotic', and agreed that the pair violated India's strict public obscenity laws. The judge took a swipe at Shetty for not resisting Gere's kisses and ordered her to appear in court on May 5th.
Shilpa has come out and said that the embrace wasn't obscene and has called on the media to focus on HIV/AIDS awareness instead. She has said "I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner". She went on to say, "I understand people's sentiments, but I don't want a foreigner to take bad memories from here".
Gere left India after the function, prior to the warrant being issued.
Cases against celebrities such as this, and the case filed against Liz Hurley for wearing revealing clothing and failiing to remove her shoes when walking around the sacred fire at her wedding ceremony are common in India, adding to the backlog of legal cases that has nearly crippled the country's judical system.
Here's a video of the embrace. I'm sure you'll all agree that it is highly offensive
Geez....Britney Spears and Paris Hilton better give India a wide berth. They'll spend the rest of their lives in jail for their offenses against good taste and values!

And this is the land of my origin (unfortunately I was born in Ol' blighty.)
I read about this on an Indian site and it's all freakin' ridiculous.
Indian movies are full of 'suggested' sexuality and nubile nymphs and coy fluttering eyelashes but woe forbid reality enters the show.
No kissing allowed but naked stomachs can be tickled with feathers, in the rain...followed by many many costume schanges...and less and less clothing.
AND....it's okay to have a plotline that makes no sense, has a thousand rapes, a trillion murders, a couple of wars but...no kissing.
Even Aishwarya Rai is in trouble because she kisses her co actor in her latest Indian movie.
I could go and on about this but...I really have to do some work!!
Although...Gere should have known that Shilpa would bear the brunt of this. He knows India well enough, their customs, etc to know that to do this in public is taboo.
You can see the discomfort in her face.

I too think Richard probably knows Indian customs as well and should have known that he'd cause controversy.
As for your comments about Indian movies and dancing etc. I agree 100%. I've always thought their dancing was highly suggestive, so was surprised to see the furore it created. I know that the Bollywood movies don't have kissing....but I didn't think it was taken to such an extreme!
It seems crazy to me too. But I guess that's the culture in India and we need to respect it......but issuing warrants for arrest is taking things a little toooooooooo far.
I feel sorry for poor Shilpa.

Lets face it, countries that are doing crap compared to us always want to assert themselves against us by attacking our 'values' or whatever. Well guys we're still kicking YOUR asses financially and in living conditions, so dont you really think it should be YOU learning from US?.....
Number one examples, watching the 'Shapelle' trial(You call that a civilized courtroom and trial? Catch up!) and the judge deciding that all the reporters have to turn off their microphones and translators....You could just tell from his cheeky grin hes thinking "Ooh, I got all the whit people watching me and Im gonna make em sweat"
Childish.
And the other day I heard about how they threw out their OWN laws to keep the Bali nine in prison....
Even more CHILDISH!!
And now this. Come on world, get it together or I'll have to send you all back to primary school! Aside from the ridiculousness that Ive already described -
How many times do things like this have to happen before law systems realize that you just cant touch a rich person? Even Australia had to learn its lesson with Sylvester Stallone!
Silly naughty country! Slap on the wrist for you!
Now everybody kiss...

Kiss and make up sounds like a good plan!
You make a very good point. The only thing I would say though is......America retrospectively changed a few laws so that there was no possible way David Hicks could be found not guilty. So even the most westernised/modern cultures aren't above it.
But everyone does need to grow up!!!
Mis,
Yeah, it was a bit hamfisted eh! Whatever image he was going for...he missed!

I feel sorry for Shilpa Shetty - she didn't exactly seem to be a willing participant in the kiss, yet she is being punished for it.

Wasn't Richard Gere there for an AIDS awareness, trying to help these scum-bags?
I have never been a racist, but now I hate these fucking weirdos. FUCK India!
That place is a shithole, filled with a bunch of dumb-ass, dot-headed idiots.
I feel what Richard Gere did was wrong, but, to put them in prison is just so fucking insane. I think that they should fuck Judge Dinesh Gupta in the ass with his own mallet. FUCK YOU India, president of India, Judge Dinesh Gupta and every other ignorant sand nigger that agrees with arresting these people. We should nuke that whole shitty country, right now! Anyway, I goota go, I am going to slice up an Indian holy cow and eat a hamburger.
