Hugh Jackman to Host Oscars
December 15th 2008 00:05
It was announced last Friday that the host of the 2009 Oscars would be none other than the Sexiest Man Alive, Hugh Jackman.
An interesting choice, given the Academy's prediliction for big-name comedians to host the event. Billy Crystal has hosted 8 times, Jon Stewart has hosted twice, Whoopi Goldberg has done the honours 4 times with Ellen De Generes, David Letterman and Chris Rock also each having a crack at it. Despite the big names though, ratings have been steadily declining. While it's more likely that the reason for the ratings drop is due to the fact the show takes about 75 hours than the host of the event, the Academy has decided to shake things up with new producers, director, set designer and music director as well as a new type of host.
Of Jackman, the new producers call him " a consumate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star", calling him "the ideal choice to host a celebration of the years movies - and to have fun doing it".
For those who are concerned about the choice, it's worth remembering that Hugh won an Emmy in 2005 for his work hosting the 58th Annual Tony Awards in 2004. Hugh is also comfortable on the stage, starting in show business in theatre, and winning a Tony Award for his portrayal of Peter Allen in the The Boy From Oz.
If nothing else, I figure that if the broadcost gets too boring the producers can always call on Hugh to strip off his shirt. That'll keep the female (and lets face it, a good portion of the male audience) happy!!
So, thoughts? Anyone think Hugh is going to be noticeably better or worse than previous hosts???
