Colin Farrell Talks About His 'Special Needs' Son
October 16th 2007 05:17
After a few beers its hard to tell whether it's my son or me who is the one afflicted with a disability
4 year old James only took his first step approximately 6 weeks ago. As Colin describes it:
“He took his first steps about six weeks ago and it was four years in the making. All the work is his, he worked his arse off for four years.”
“And when he took the first steps it was incredibly emotional, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.”
“And when he took the first steps it was incredibly emotional, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.”
Farrell considers himself blessed to have James in his life, calling him an "Incredibly happy little boy." He is also committed to helping James reach his own potential and wants his son to be "as happy as he can be." Of his son's disability, Colin says:
”With my son the only time I'm reminded that there is something different about him – that he has some deviation of what is perceived to be normal – is when I see him with other four-year-olds.
“Then I go “oh yeah” and it comes back to me. But from day one I felt that he's the way he's meant to be.”

Prior to his sons birth, Colin was involved with the Special Olympics, leading the Irish Special Olympics team to Croke Park where the games took place and believes that anyone with a disability can still contribute to society and lead a full and happy life. Of his time with the Special Olympic team, Colin remarks, “its mad the way the world works. It's bizarre. I experienced the overwhelming effect of being around those athletes pretty much just before my son was born with special needs."
“I have never thought of my son as being someone with a disability. It goes back to special needs and what is a disability and what isn't”.
It's nice to hear Colin talking about his son, and openly discussing James' condition, rather than some celebrities rumoured to deny the existence of their childs disability because it conflicts with their religious beliefs....*cough***cough*John Travolta **cough.
Sorry, frog in my throat.
I've always loved Colin Farrell, but I think I even like him a little bit more now.

Yeah...the Irish lad seems to have a heart...nice to see he can identify when he is drunk too!
cheers and I hope this rest has given your bile duct a chance to recuperate, I am awaiting a suitable vitriolic verbal astringent for the rich and fatuous, whom we all look to for creative inspiration and a good old snigger at their expense!!

Wonderful article. My nephew has special needs so I really respect those who speak out for others. Additionally nothing is sexier as a man who loves his kids! Thanks for the positive post!
