A place where we can indulge our obsession with all things celebrity.

Are Bad Girls the New Bad Boys?

October 16th 2006 00:22
We all know that stars behaving badly makes for great tabloid fodder. But it used to be the Bad Boys that got all the attention. Who can forget the 80's brat packers. Did anyone care what Molly Ringwald did? No, they all wanted to see how Judd Nelson, Charlie Sheen, Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez were partying up a storm. We all read about Johnny Depp trashing hotel rooms. Sean Penn hitting anything that moved. Oasis trashing anything and anyone who got in their path, Rock bands filled with testosterone laden men were an accident waiting to happen.

But where have all the bad boys gone now? Flick through any newspaper or magazine and I'll bet it's not the badly behaved teens/lads/men who are causing worry to parent groups. It's the ladies that are a source for concern.

Paris, Nicole, Kelly, Lindsay, Pink, Kate. Names synonomous with partying too hard and drinking too much. It's the antics of these girls that are filling up gossip columns, newspapers, tv, radio and magazines.

If there's a party, you can bet that Lindsay is there. In fact Lindsay's antics are starting to have an effect on her career with some film studios not sure they want to work with someone so obviously burning the candle at both ends.

And Pink might now be married, but she's a chick who isn't afraid of controversy or partying. Pink's ambiguity surrounding her sexuality hasn't hurt her bad girl image either.

Then there's the Captain of the Bad Girl Squad, Paris Hilton. Paris has been charged with drink driving, been attacked (or attacked) by the estranged-wife of her new love interest, been caught out with marijuana in her handbad, and partied too hard at a Dolce Gabbana party in Milan. And that has just been in the last week! (seriously, all of those things have happened in the last week).

And if you're talking about badly behaved party girls, you can't forget about Tara Reid.

As Tara's career is non-existent these days, her partying is the ONLY thing she's known for anymore.

And who can forget our elder statesman party girl, Kate Moss.

Kate's never minded a drink and we all know she's dabbled in drugs. She also has the requisite loser bad boy boyfriend to complete the image.

And where are the guys? What happened to all the bad boys? I mean, they can't have all gotten old and fat and settled down (like the bad boys I mentioned at the top of this post). There aren't any real bad boys left. Colin Farrell has had rehab and apparently is no longer a party boy. Russell Crowe hasn't thrown a phone at any hotel staff members in very long time. Nope, it looks like all the bad boys are sitting at home watching Dirty Harry and reminiscing about the good old days when they weren't upstaged by the girls.

Of course, there's also the argument that what our Bad Girls are up to really isn't that bad. I mean 24 year old girls going out, getting drunk, sleeping with inappropriate men and dabbling in recreational drug use. It doesn't sound that much different to my 20s really. So maybe they're not such bad girls after all (or possibly, I was more badly behaved than I thought I was...????)

My personal opinion on the topic is. Bad Girls, Bad Boys. Who really cares? Let them have their fun. Stop expecting stars to be role models. They're not. They never will be. Lets all just be thankful that we don't have hoardes of photographers around eager to document it every time we drink too much and make fools of ourselves!!

Totally agree with you.. its the same with sports stars, society seems to think just because they can kick a ball or whatever that they are role models. While I don't expect celebrities to be role models, they should still fall in line with community standards, which I think a majority of them are doing- all you can really accuse them of doing is having fun

Exactly! When all they're doing is having some fun and not hurting anyone then who cares.

And sports stars. Why do people insist on trying to make them role models. Playing a sport well does not guarantee you a strong moral compass (just ask Shane Warne). And a lot of them aren't exactly the smartest kids on the block.

Yea, and also I think Australia suffers from the tall poppy syndrome, we love to cut our stars down to size and Warney is the perfect example of that

It is the Australian way. We love you till you're popular, then we hate you. Though once you go down a certain level, then we'll love you again! : )

While it's good to support the little guy. The fact that we then turn so viciously on the Little Guy when he gets successful is a weird trait of ours. And unfortunately I'm, guilty of it too at times.
