Angeline Cares About Freedom of The Press
June 15th 2007 06:30
Angelina Jolie has been accused of being a hypocrite during media interviews promoting her new movie A Mighty Heart. A movie about the importance of freedom of the press. In the movie, Angelina plays Marianne Pearl, the widow of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter, Daniel Pearl.
The New York premiere was held to support the organisation Reporters Without Borders, which defends persecuted journalists, works to improve the safety of journalists and fights censorship and laws that undermine press freedom.
Jolie was accused of being a hypocrite after making journalists who wished to interview her sign contracts limiting what they could ask her. Journalists were only allowed to ask her questions relevant to the movie and no personal questions. Failure to comply with the contracts would result in Jolie suing the journalist. Way to support freedom of the press!!!
As a result of the contracts, USA Today and the Associated Press cancelled their interviews rather than sign the contract. Eventually Angelina cancelled all print interviews after she heard of the press reaction. It's also been reported that Angelina initially tried to ban Fox News from the movie premiere. However, publicists from Paramount Pictures eventually allowed Fox reps into the event.
Jeff Julliard of Reporters Without Borders told Fox News that he didn't approve of Angelina's attempts to ban Fox from the premiere. Guess Angelina wasn't aware that Fox had given A Mighty Heart rave reviews at Cannes!
On the one hand, I can see why she'd want journalists to only ask questions about the movie. But the reality is that she's earning $10M per movie. And Angelina, you're not getting $10M because you're a great actress. You're getting $10M because the public has a fascination with you. Deal with it. If you don't like it, then do what you've been threatening to do for the last few years. Take time off from making movies to concentrate on being a mother.

Flashes of memories
hypocrites in Hollywood? no way!
I must admit I don`t really follow the lives of the stars too much but I do like it when they use their fame for humanitarian purposes.
For $10million a movie I would be prepared to have interviews about anything...almost!
What amazes me about dear ol' Ange is that she wants to adopt the world's orphans and yet apparently has no maternal feelings toward her own child... well that and the fact that she used to wear a vial of one of her hubbies blood around her neck!

Film & TV on DVD
But the reality of the celebrity landscape at the moment makes it pretty clear that their, is no line of respect on the boundaries of privacy in the realm of mega stardom. It's naive and stupid of her to decide to make a stand at this particular event, when she is attached to A Mighty Heart.

I agree with you wholeheartedly and I might as well copy and paste John's comment because it echoes my humble opinion. I lived briefly in the "limelight" and tough shit...deal with it or get another job.....

Jolie is a walking contradiction in terms anyway right? Although this particular act of stupidity really sticks out like a sore thumb...
If you're going to be a a high paid celebrity, then expect to be put in the spotlight...because everything you do is going to end up on the front page of some tabloid...
Why is she promoting a movie about freedom of the press and then personally limiting it herself? Of course people are going to call her a hypocrite!
What did she expect after pulling something like that?
*rolls eyes*
I'll never understand Hollywood....thank God I'm a vet...
LOL
Great post!
Take care,
Nick

.....which is all a bit odd, considering she's the boss...but...although I understand what all the uproar is about....it would just be so annoying to have that level of fame and try to do some good with the opportunities one has but all these tabloid cretins (yeah even the CNN and ilk ones) want to know is what she and Brad do during sex.
(well come on I can't be the only one....)
Thing is...if you don't want to answer questions, don't do any publicity or...when asked a 'personal' question, just say 'No Comment. I'm a blogger.'

You make a good point my lovely. Lets face it Angelina has done thousands and thousands of press interviews. After all that if you can't steer the interview away from topics you don't want to talk about, then you're not doing so well.
I do love Angelina, but if it was her that put out the contracts (and I can't see a lackey doing it), then it was just stupid. You were at a function about freedom of the press!
